The political turmoil featuring in Pakistan though hasn’t been the limelight for the first time in the perspective of its history, but never before the situation spilled over to this new low. This political upheaval which has been the bedrock of Pakistan’s surging crisis leading to the brink of economic insolvency, war on terror menace, with the new addition of potentially, constitutional breakdown, has been ripening its roots in the country, the solution of which is yet to be churned out.
“The malaise of this country lies in this inefficacious system, where parliament is just meant to secure political beneficiaries, but never could it serve as a platform between the government & opposition to devise consensus on country’s necessary issues.”
Since the dissolution of Punjab and KPK’s provincial assemblies, the matter of elections has been propelled even more by PTI under Imran Khan. But as it has been the case throughout its history, both the government and opposition’s impotence to negotiate on crucial matters is making Pakistan pay their cost. The malaise of this country lies in this inefficacious system, where parliament is just meant to secure political beneficiaries, but never could it serve as a platform between the government & opposition to devise consensus on country’s necessary issues. This inaptitude of government and opposition made a way for the judiciary to meddle in, recurring the history, to sort a way out of this constitutional query.
Even after announcement of the election date in Punjab on 14 May, the government is reluctant to bow down, hindering the polls to be held, by opposing the holding of provincial and national assembly’s elections on separate dates. The ongoing talks between the government and opposition on negotiating a same date for national and provincial assembly’s elections turned out to be futile as well, as the government is too stern in its stance of completing their national assembly’s tenure.
This barren negotiation which has posed jeopardy to this country’s prevailing crisis, has even raised questions on the credibility of this government’s concerns to alleviate this country’s sufferings. The government just wants to evade the elections as far as they can, which probably is the most undemocratic things, you can expect from a democratic government. Though they have already paid the political cost of which, and are even paying now, but their penchant to delay elections isn’t drying. The attitude of this government just seems inscrutable. They aren’t eager for a productive dialogue, don’t even want judiciary to interfere in political decisions, creating a deadlock for themselves and for the progress of this much wanted chaotic state.
Dialogues and negotiations are meant to render better solutions. Our leaders have learnt the art of negotiating with the establishment throughout their gloomy history. Unfortunately, what they couldn’t learn is to serve democracy, to break the shackles between themselves. Solution of problems is what people now want, political turmoil and chaos isn’t one of it. Even now is the time, to save the honor of parliament, to resuscitate the democracy which is on its last breath. 75 years of history deserve to learn, a way forward, not two-steps back, to manufacture a better future for this country.
